Other information: SINDIFER - an acronym for 'Sindicato da Industria do Ferro no Estado de Minas Gerais', meaning 'Union of Pig Iron Producers in the State of Minas Gerais' - was constituted on the 30th of April 1933. The purpose of the Union was to represent the pig iron industry in Minas Gerais state.

Presently, the Union holds 21 associated companies, out of which, 16 are independent pig iron producers and 5 are integrated to steel production. The Union is managed by a President and an Administrative Council of 14 members, the latter representing the associated companies. Both president and counselors are elected at an Ordinary General Meeting specially convened for this purpose. Their terms last 3 years.

Minas Gerais is the most important region for pig iron production in the world, with clean production technology based on charcoal instead of coke.

The Minas Gerais region has approximately 6.6 million tonnes of installed pig iron capacity, and manages some 360 thousand hectares of forest land. Pig iron operations account for over 86,000 direct and indirect jobs in the area.

The local iron ore deposits are characterised by their high quality and low content of impurities. The geographic centre of pig iron production in Minas Gerais is located in the central part of the state, close to Belo Horizonte. Minas Gerais also benefits from an efficient transportation system to its sea ports (including Paul Port in Vitoria) and from its close proximity to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo.
