JSPL operates the largest coal-based sponge iron plant in the world. Commissioned in 1991, the Raigarh sponge iron plant has a manufacturing capacity of 1.37 MTPA and metallic iron content of more than 81%. The plant uses direct reduced iron (DRI) process method of production and utilises ten indigenously developed rotary kilns (6 kilns of 300 tonnes per day and 4 kilns of 500 tonnes per day).
The firm also has over 3 million tonnes per annum of steelmaking capacity. This includes a 0.6 MTPA wire rod mill and a 1 MTPA capacity bar mill at Patratu, Jharkhand; a medium and light structural mill at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh and a 2.5 MTPA steel melting shop and a plate mill to produce up to 5.00-meter-wide plates at Angul, Odisha.
The firm also has has significant mining interests in South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and Mauritania. Globally, the company has a mining capacity of over 9.4 million tonnes / year of coal and iron ore. This capacity includes the Tensa iron ore mine in Odisha (3.1 mt/yr), the Kiepersol Colliery in South Africa (1.2 mt/year), the Chirodzi Coal Mine in Mozambique (capaicty of 3 mt per annum) and the New South Wales Colliery [Wollongong Coal Limited] in Australia (2.1 mt / year).
