Other information: Peoples Steel Mills Ltd is a world class alloy and special steel manufacturer plant located in Karachi, Pakistan. The company was set-up by the Government of Pakistan in 1975 with Japanese assistance. In order to keep pace with emerging technologies, the plant was upgraded in 1996 though a comprehensive balancing and modernization programme with the technical assistance of VAIS, INTECO and Bohler of Austria. The plant is now equipped with modern melting, refining, degassing, electro slag re-melting and necessary casting, rolling and forging facilities with an annual capacity of 70,000 mt.

The plant has the capability to produce steels according to all major international quality standards and to date has manufactured more than 300 steel grades. PSML enjoys the highest market share in the alloy and special steel market of Pakistan. A diversified base of customers includes high profile illustrious end users in automotive, defense, machinery construction, high rise buildings, transportation and engineering sectors.

Main production facilities operated by PSML include

• Melting and refining, using EAF; with ladle furnace, vacuum degassing and vacuum oxygen decarburization
• Secondary refining, using an electro-slag-remelting (ESR) unit capable of producing 320 to 720 mm diameter ingots having highly uniform structure for critical applications
• Continuous casting, specifically designed for alloy steels (equipped with soft secondary cooling and a two stage magnetic stirrer)
• Ingot casting, producing highly refined ingots in rectangular, round and square sections. Ingots can be slowly cooled, stress relieved or annealed
• Hammer forging
• Press forging, using a 1700 mt hydraulic press equipped with reheating furnace and auto manipulator
• Blooming and slabbing
• Bar rolling, where PSML can roll round and square section sizes from 12 to 80 mm, flats from 40 to 120 mm width and 6 to 20 mm thickness
• Radial forging, making use of state-of the-art processes to manufacture profiles up to 200mmRing rolling, PSML being equipped with reheating and annealing furnaces used for the production of rings up to 2,200mm diameter.

Main products sold by the firm include continuous cast billet, round bars, flat bars, plates, sheets, die forgings, free forgings, rings and castings, seamless and welded pipe.
